OSM Director Robert Uram To Resign Effective September 15In letters to President Clinton and Secretary Babbitt, Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) Director, Robert Uram announced his resignation effective September 15, 1996. Uram, who was confirmed as Director March 8, 1994, noted in his letter to the Secretary that, "I set out to solve OSM's management and communications problems, enhance relations with states and tribes, improve communications with coal field residents and the coal industry, prevent environmental problems, and be aggressive about restoring abandoned mine lands. With your help and that of OSM's dedicated employees, we have made great progress in achieving these goals." Uram told OSM's employees of his decision and thanked them for their dedication and devotion to public service. "I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to be Director of this agency," said Uram. "You are a diverse, highly competent and highly trained work force. You serve with integrity, demonstrate excellence in the many varied duties you perform and provide high quality service to our many customers and stakeholders. Over the years, you have been presented with many challenges and you have always met them. I know you will continue to do so in the future." Uram said that he plans to take some time off and then return home to San Francisco. "It is with a sense of regret and respect that I accept Bob's decision," Babbitt said. "He has been an outstanding Director and has given the agency a clear mission that will ensure that the Office of Surface Mining continues it's positive work for the American people." Secretary Babbitt also expressed his strong support and appreciation for the hard work and commitment of OSM's dedicated employees. Ms. Kathrine L. Henry, the Department's associate solicitor, Division of Minerals Resources will serve as Acting Director of OSM until an appointment is made. The Division of Minerals Resources is responsible for legal matters related to the programs and activities of the Geological Survey, Minerals Management Service, and the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement. - DOI -
