U.S. Department of the InteriorFor Immediate Release: May 2, 1997 Contact: Peter Hamm 202-208-7975 STATEMENT OF INTERIOR SECRETARY BRUCE BABBITT ON THE PRESIDENTS BALANCED BUDGET AGREEMENT President Clinton has achieved what longtime observers of government, and many of our citizens, thought was impossible. He has ensured that our children, and our childrens children, will not inherit a suffocating debt that will rob them of a chance for prosperity. This President has had many proud accomplishments, but in reaching an agreement for a balanced budget, he has accomplished something altogether unique . The agreement that was reached preserves our commitment to our natural heritage. Our efforts at restoration and protection of our national parks, wildlife refuges and public lands will continue. The efforts we have moved forward over the past four years, such as voluntary conservation agreements to protect threatened wildlife, will continue. Our responsibilities to Native American people are also safeguarded under this agreement. This is an agreement that I am very proud to support. Because of this President and the events of this day, we can better afford to educate our children. We can continue the incredible growth of our economy and the fantastic progress at lowering unemployment, the unparalleled record at creating jobs and the impressive progress weve made at improving the quality of our environment. --DOI--
