STATEMENT ON CALIFORNIA VOTE ON HEADWATERS

Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt today issued the following statement after the California legislature voted to approve funding for the acquisition of the Headwaters old-growth redwoods in northern California:

“I was pleased to see the California legislature has approved the state’s share of the funding for the Headwaters forest. The decision by the legislature removes the last major barrier to the acquisition of the Headwaters and restrictions on logging that will protect more than 200,000 acres of trees nearby. I look forward to finishing the process next year so that we can protect these magnificent trees for future generations. And I particularly want to thank Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who has tirelessly led this complicated effort.”
