Secretary Norton to Swear in First Woman as
Chief of U.S. Park Police

WASHINGTON -- Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton will swear in Teresa C. Chambers as the new chief of the U.S. Park Police, Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002. The ceremony will be held 2 p.m. at the National Museum of Natural History. Chambers will become the 14th Chief of the U.S. Park Police and the first female to ever serve in that position.

The stage for the swearing-in ceremony will be shared by three women who are first in their respective positions. Secretary Norton is the first female to head the 152-year-old Interior Department, Fran Mainella is the first female director of the 86-year-old National Park Service, and Teresa Chambers will become the first female to serve as chief of police in the 210-year-old history of the U.S. Park Police.

The ceremony will include a review of U.S. Park Police officers on the National Mall by Secretary Norton, Director Mainella, and Chief of Police Teresa Chambers. The review will take place at the1000 block of Madison Drive, N.W., immediately following the swearing-in.
