Interior Department Celebrates Global Science
and Technology Week

WASHINGTON -- Today marks the official beginning of Global Science and Technology Week. May 6-12 has been set aside by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Department of State to help highlight the benefits of international scientific collaboration. The week of activities is designed to foster and demonstrate the importance of math and science education in a globalized economy.

Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton previewed the week on April 27 at an open house of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Department of the Interior's science agency. The USGS is sought out internationally for its natural science expertise and its vast earth and biological data research.

"Global Science and Technology Week helps us to demonstrate that science truly has no boundaries," said Secretary Norton. "From patented innovative processes for cleaning up acid mine drainage to satellite and radar for tracking bird migrations, we are exploring many scientific frontiers."

Attached is a list of events and ongoing research projects planned by DOI agencies as part of this week's celebration.
