Curtis and the North American Indians on Saturday, December 16, 2000 at 1, and 3:00 PM Featured Saturday, December 16, 2000, at the U.S. Department of the Interior Museum is the film Coming to Light: Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indians. The video presents the life of Edward S. Curtis (1868 - 1952), his drive to document traditional Indian life, and responses by contemporary American Indians to his work. Viewing times for the 54-minute film are at 1:00, and 3:00 PM; no reservations are required.Currently on exhibit at the Interior Museum are masterful copperplate prints of Curtis' photographs of members of the Tewa Pueblo, Absaroka (Crow), and Nez Perce Nations. The prints represent over a dozen of the 40,000 images taken by Curtis in his effort to preserve American Indian cultural traditions that he feared were vanishing. Coming to Light, directed by Anne Makepeace and released this year, discusses the complexity of Curtis' legacy, both how the images have inspired the revival of cultural traditions and the controversy these often romantic photographs have spurred. The Interior Museum is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with the exception of federal holidays, and the third Saturday of each month from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the building, its Museum, and the film are free.
