Public Lecture Series at Interior Department Features Best-Selling Authors\Leading Environmentalists Washington, D.C. - The Department of Interior University and the Interior Department Recreation Association, in conjunction with Politics and Prose bookstore, continue to host a series of afternoon lectures featuring noted authors at the department's Yates Auditorium, 1849 C Street N.W. Upcoming lectures, which are free and open to the public, include: September 19, 3 p.m. William A. Shutkin, THE LAND THAT COULD BE: Environmentalism and Democracy in the Twenty-First Century. William A. Shutkin, a lecturer in Urban Studies and Planning at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Adjunct Professor of Law at Boston College Law School, will kick off the fall lectures by discussing his book, The Land That Could Be: Environmentalism and Democracy in the Twenty-First Century (MIT Press, 2000 $29.95). The basic underlying message of the book is that the nation's environmental health is a critical factor in its success as a vital democracy - "Social health, democratic community, and environmentalism are one." Shutkin is Founder and President of New Ecology, Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts and cofounder and former executive director of the environmental justice organization Alternatives for Community & Environment. October 12, 3 p.m., Dr. Deborah Tannen, The Argument Culture (Ballentine, 1999; also author of You Just Don't Understand). Dr. Tannen will discuss her latest book, The Argument Culture, which received the Common Ground Book Award. Her previous books include You Just Don't Understand, which was on the New York Times best seller list for nearly four years, and Talking from 9 to 5: Women and Men in the Workplace, a New York Times Business Best Seller. Dr. Tannen has been a frequent TV and radio guest as well as contributing writer to many newspapers and magazines. She is a linguistics professor at Georgetown University. November 14, 3 p.m., Bob Nelson, 1001 Ways To Take Initiative at Work (Workman Press, 1999).
