SECRETARY-GENERAL DISTRESSED AT 'HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE' FROM AFGHAN EARTHQUAKE
The following statement was issued today in London by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:
The Secretary-General was distressed to hear of the severe earthquake in northern Afghanistan, which has caused heavy loss of life.� He has asked the United Nations Mission in Kabul to do everything possible to help.� To that end, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General has already convened a meeting with United Nations agencies and with non-governmental organizations, with the aim of assisting the Interim Administration to deal with this tragedy in a country that has suffered so much in recent years.
