SECRETARY-GENERAL EXTENDS CONDOLENCES FOLLOWING EL SALVADOR EARTHQUAKE
The following statement was issued by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 14 January:
The Secretary-General extends his deepest condolences to the Government and people of El Salvador for the loss of life and property that has occurred as a result of Saturday’s earthquake.� He wishes to assure them, as well as neighboring countries, that the United Nations will extend all efforts within its means to help the affected populations.� He wishes to thank governments and private individuals who are assisting in the relief activities, and appeals to the international community as a whole to be generous in its response.
