MAJOR-GENERAL JIN HA HWANG APPOINTED FORCE COMMANDER
OF UNITED NATIONS PEACEKEEPING FORCE IN CYPRUS
Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced today the appointment of Major-General Jin Ha Hwang of the Republic of Korea as Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) to succeed Major-General Victory Rana who relinquishes his post on 15 December 2001.
Major-General Hwang enlisted as a cadet in the Army of the Republic of Korea in 1965.� He is a graduate of the Korean Military Academy, US Army Command and General Staff College and Central Michigan University.� He has held various military appointments in the service of his country including command of an artillery battery, battalion and at a higher level in the ROK-US Combined Forces, as well as Commanding General of V Corps Artillery.� Other assignments as colonel and general officer were primarily in political-military affairs and in strategy and policy positions with the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Ministry of National Defense.� He is presently serving as Defense Attaché in the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the United States in Washington, DC.�
Born in 1946, Major-General Hwang is married to Bo Kyung and they have two sons and one daughter.
