NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS

NEW YORK BOARD OF EDUCTION TO HOLD MEETING AT UNITED NATIONS

The New York City Board of Education will be holding its monthly superintendents’ meeting at the United Nations this Tuesday, 13 February, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Hosted by the United Nations Department of Public Information, the meeting brings to Headquarters the New York City Schools Chancellor, Harold Levy, his deputies and senior staff and the 43 superintendents who collectively oversee the education of the city’s 1.1 million schoolchildren.

Welcoming the group to the United Nations will be Mrs. Gillian Martin Sorensen, Assistant Secretary-General for External Relations.  Later, Ambassador William H. Luers, President of the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) will deliver remarks at a luncheon in the Delegates Dining Room.

Besides discussing their own issues, sharing best practices, and highlighting future plans, the superintendents and others in attendance will have an opportunity to meet with United Nations officials, members of delegations, and representatives from UNA-USA over lunch.  They will also be provided guided tours of Headquarters and information materials on the United Nations and on UNA, including the recently completed video on Model United Nations, co-produced by UNA-USA and the Department of Public Information.

Meeting at the United Nations is particularly meaningful for this group in view of the fact that New York City, which represents the largest school district in the United States, has a student body that speaks over 140 languages.  This event offers New York’s educators the opportunity to establish closer ties with the United Nations and learn about its work first hand.
