SECRETARY-GENERAL TO OPEN EXHIBIT OF UNITED NATIONS POSTERS 20001213Secretary-General Kofi Annan is to open a United Nations poster exhibition in the General Assembly visitors’ lobby on Monday, 18 December at 12 noon. Entitled “For a Better World”, the exhibition is the first of its kind, showing posters produced for and by the United Nations and its specialized agencies since 1945. The 125 carefully selected posters provide an overview of the most important undertakings of the United Nations in such areas as peacekeeping; development; environmental issues; fighting against hunger, poverty and illiteracy; defending human rights, and promoting disarmament. The exhibition is being organized under the patronage of the Secretary- General and Mrs. Annan and is sponsored by the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI), the United States Fund for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Mr. David Rockefeller, Mrs. Nelson A. Rockefeller, Ambassador Joseph Verner Reed, and the United Nations Association of New York. The posters in the exhibition appear in a book by Edward B. Marks “For a Better World – Posters of the United Nations” (currently on sale in the United Nations bookshop). Mr. Marks is also the author of “A World of Art: The United Nations Collection”. The exhibition will be on view in the visitors’ lobby until 1 February 2001. It will then travel to major United Nations duty stations and the World Bank.
