UN UNIVERSITY TO HOST TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION 20001019(Reissued as received.) NEW YORK, 19 October (UNU) -- The United Nations University will mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the initiation of its activities on 23 October. On that occasion, the UNU will host an international symposium on "The United Nations University at 25: Reaching Out to Japan and the World". Among the speakers will be Hiroshi Kida, former Vice-Minister of Education; James Hester, the first rector of UNU; Heitor Gurgulino de Souza, the third rector of UNU; and Justin Thorens, former chair of the UNU Council. There will also be a brief ceremony during which conference rooms at UNU headquarters will be renamed in honour of U Thant, who as United Nations Secretary-General proposed the establishment of UNU, and Elizabeth Rose, who first raised the establishment of UNU with the Japanese authorities.
