DAG HAMMARSKJOLD LIBRARY PLANS OPEN HOUSE, INFORMATION FAIR TO MARK UN DAY

20001018

The Dag Hammarskjöld Library will host an Open House and Information Fair for delegates and staff of the permanent missions and the Secretariat on 24 October, United Nations Day 2000, between the hours of 12 noon and 3 p.m., in the Library Reading Rooms.

The highlight of the event will be demonstrations of its latest products, including UNBISnet, a remotely accessible online database that contains:

-- An index to all United Nations documentation issued since 1979; -- A catalogue of the Library’s collections; -- The voting records of the General Assembly and the Security Council; -- And an index to the speeches in the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council and Trusteeship Council.

Library staff will be available to answer questions concerning UNBISnet and its other Internet-accessible reference tools (UN-I-QUE, United Nations Documentation Research Guide, etc.) and to demonstrate the Library’s use of scanning technologies.

Demonstrations will be given also of many commercial electronic products and services that are now, or are soon to be, available from the desktop (e.g., Reuters Business Briefing, Lexis-Nexis, Economist Intelligence Unit databases, Oxford Analytica, NewsEdge, ProQuest Direct, etc.).

Sign-up sheets for passwords, group or customized training, and e-mail delivery of “UN in the News” and other electronic journals will be readily available.

The Dag Hammarskjöld Library welcomes this opportunity to introduce or reacquaint delegates and staff with the wide array of resources and services available to them.
