SECRETARY-GENERAL WHOLEHEARTEDLY WELCOMES HISTORIC INTER-KOREAN SUMMIT

The following statement was issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for the Secretary-General:

The Secretary-General wholeheartedly welcomes the historic inter-Korean summit which began today in Pyongyang. He salutes the vision and wisdom of General Secretary Kim Jong Il and President Kim Dae-jung in opening this dialogue at the highest level. The Secretary-General hopes that it marks the beginning of a new era of mutual trust and cooperation between the two Koreas. He is also hopeful that the summit will produce substantive results, marking a turning point towards lasting peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and throughout the entire region, as well as national reunification.
