NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TUNISIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new permanent representative of Tunisia to the United Nations, Saïd Ben Mustapha, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

A diplomat for nearly 40 years, Mr. Ben Mustapha served as his country’s Minister for Foreign Affairs for two years before his current posting. Prior to that, he served as Tunisia’s Ambassador to Italy (1997) and Secretary of State for Maghreb Affairs (1991-1997). He also served as Tunisia’s Senior Representative in Libya (1988-1991), Ambassador to Jordan (1985-1988), and Ambassador to Lebanon (1982-1985).

Earlier in his diplomatic career, Mr. Ben Mustapha was Counsul General for Tunisia in Palermo, Italy, and Lyon, France. He also served as Minister- Counsellor at Tunisia’s Embassy in London (1978-1979), and as an Assistant to the Minister for Foreign Affairs (1975-1978). After entering the foreign ministry in 1962, Mr. Ben Mustapha’s first assignments were to his country’s embassies in Libya and Morocco.

Mr. Ben Mustapha received a degree in finance and economics in 1961, as well as a diploma from the École Nationale d’Administration. He pursued doctoral studies at the Philips-Universität, Federal Republic of Germany, before entering the foreign service.

Born 28 July 1938, Mr. Ben Mustapha is married with three children.
