SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES DECISION BY SUPREME COURT OF TAJIKISTAN TO LEGALIZE POLITICAL PARTIES BELONGING TO UNITED TAJIK OPPOSITION

The following statement was issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General welcomes the decision by the Supreme Court of Tajikistan taken on 12 August to legalize the political parties belonging to the United Tajik Opposition. The United Tajik Opposition had publicly declared the disbandment of its armed forces on 3 August, and the decision by the Government is another significant step further in the implementation of the peace agreement in Tajikistan.
