SECRETARY-GENERAL WARMLY WELCOMES SIGNING OF PEACE AGREEMENT BETWEEN GOVERNMENT OF SIERRA LEONE AND REVOLUTIONARY UNITED FRONT OF SIERRA LEONE

19990707The following statement was issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General warmly welcomes the signing today of a peace agreement between the Government of Sierra Leone and the Revolutionary United Front of Sierra Leone, ending years of brutal and painful warfare. He sincerely hopes that the people of Sierra Leone can now begin rebuilding their country and their lives.

He salutes the political courage of President Kabbah, who persisted in the search for a political solution, and of the political leaders of the region who supported that effort, in particular, President Eyadema of Togo, the current Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, who hosted the latest talks; President Obasanjo of Nigeria; President Taylor of Liberia; and President Campoare of Burkina Faso, who is the current Chairman of the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

He now calls on the parties to the peace accord to honour their commitments, and he offers the vigilant support of the United Nations in their efforts at reconciliation and rebuilding.
