19981020IN OBSERVANCE OF UNITED NATIONS DAY

Hamburg-Based Orchestra to Perform Works by Beethoven, Rimsky-Korsakov

In observance of United Nations Day, a concert of classical music will be held on Friday, 23 October, at 4 p.m. in the General Assembly Hall. The concert, performed by Philharmonie der Nationen, with Justus Frantz conducting, is being organized by the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) and is co-sponsored by DPI and the Government of Germany, with support from Montblanc International, Kulturzentrum Schlo Schnwlkau GbR, and Frderverein der Philharmonie der Nationen e.V.

Didier Opertti (Uruguay), President of the fifty-third session of the General Assembly, will be present to deliver his message for United Nations Day. Louise Frchette, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Dieter Kastrup, Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, will also speak.

Philharmonie der Nationen is a Hamburg-based travelling orchestra composed of young musicians from more than 40 countries. It was founded by Justus Frantz, who took his inspiration from the words of his colleague Leonard Bernstein -- "Let's make music as friends" -- and set out to form a musical community that would demonstrate the abilities of different peoples to work together in peace and harmony. In addition to conducting, Frantz performs with the orchestra as a piano soloist.

The concert programme consists of two pieces by Ludwig van Beethoven, "Leonore" Overture No. 3 op. 72 and Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-Flat Major, op. 73, "Emperor"; and "Scheherazade", a Symphonic Suite, op. 35, by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Accredited correspondents will be admitted on presentation of a valid United Nations grounds pass.
