ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT WELCOMES STATEMENTS BY PAKISTAN AND INDIA ON WORK TOWARDS SIGNING CTBT 19980924Following is a statement attributable to the spokesman for the President of the General Assembly, Didier Opertti (Uruguay):The President of the fifty-third session of the General Assembly has been greatly encouraged by the announcements made by the Prime Ministers of both Pakistan and India in the course of the general debate, indicating the readiness of both Governments to work towards the speedy conclusion of discussions towards their respective signing of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), thereby heeding the concerns of the international community and increasing the momentum for the total global ban on the testing of nuclear weapons. The timing of these announcements, which coincided with the second anniversary of the opening for signature of this Treaty, is particularly gratifying as it considerably increases the likelihood of a speedy entry into force of this important element in the efforts towards the end of the arms race, nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. * *** * United Nations
