ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT CALLS ON INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO EXTEND ALL POSSIBLE ASSISTANCE TO SMALL ISLAND NATIONS AFFECTED BY HURRICANE GEORGES

19980923The following was issued today by the spokesman for the President of the General Assembly:

The President of the fifty-third session of the United Nations General Assembly, Didier Opertti (Uruguay), has followed with utmost concern the progress of hurricane Georges across the Caribbean region. He is greatly saddened by the loss of human life and extensive material damage caused by this natural calamity. He would like to express his deepest condolences to the governments of the affected countries as well as to the families of the victims, and also call on the international community to extend all possible assistance to alleviate the consequences of this disaster on the small island developing nations of the region.
