SECRETARY-GENERAL SADDENED BY DEATH OF RICARDO RAMIREZ, KEY FIGURE IN NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN GUATEMALA AND URNG 19980914The following was issued today by the Spokesman for the Secretary- General Kofi Annan:The Secretary-General has learned with sadness of the death of Ricardo Ram�rez (former Comandante Rolando Mor�n) in Guatemala City on 11 September, due to natural causes. Mr. Ram�rez was a key figure in the negotiations between the Government of Guatemala and the former guerrilla group, Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG), that led to the peace agreements which were signed in December 1996. He was Secretary-General of the URNG, which is in the process of becoming a political party. The Secretary-General met with Mr. Ram�rez during the course of his recent visit to Guatemala and was encouraged by his deep commitment to the peace process. The Secretary-General expresses his condolences to the family of Mr. Ram�rez, to his colleagues at the URNG and to the people of Guatemala. * *** *
