ACTIVITIES OF DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL IN COLOMBIA, 29-30 APRIL 19980504Deputy Secretary-General Louise Fréchette travelled to Santa Fé de Bogota, Colombia, to represent the United Nations at celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS). She arrived in the evening of Wednesday, 29 April.On Thursday morning, following opening statements by President Ernesto Samper of Colombia and by OAS Secretary-General Cesar Gaviria, Ms. Fréchette made a statement on behalf of the United Nations. (See Press Release DSG/SM/3). Following an exchange of views by the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the OAS member States, the Deputy Secretary-General attended a luncheon hosted by President Samper at the presidential palace. While in Bogota, the Deputy Secretary-General met separately with Rosario Green, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Mexico; with Enrique Iglesias, President of the Inter-American Development Bank; and with José Ocampo, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Ms. Fréchette also attended a meeting of heads of United Nations organizations and agencies based in Bogota. On Thursday evening, 30 April, Ms. Fréchette attended a reception hosted by OAS Secretary-General Gaviria at the Museo Nacional.
