DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL TO VISIT BOGOTA, COLOMBIA, 29 APRIL - 1 MAY

19980429To Represent United Nations at Celebration Of Organization of American States' Fiftieth Anniversary

The Deputy Secretary-General will travel to Santafe de Bogota, Colombia this afternoon in order to represent the United Nations at the fiftieth anniversary celebration of the signing of the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS). Ms. Fr�chette will make a statement on behalf of the United nations following opening statements by Ernesto Samper, President of Colombia, and Cesar Gaviria, Secretary-General of the OAS. Following an exchange of views by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of OAS member States, Ms. Fr�chette will attend a luncheon hosted by President Samper at the Presidential Palace.

While in Bogota, the Deputy Secretary-General will have separate meetings with several Foreign Ministers, as well as with Enrique Iglesias, President of the Inter-American Development Bank, and Jos� Ocampo, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Ms. Fr�chette will also meet with the heads of United Nations organizations and agencies based in Bogota.

The Deputy Secretary-General will return to New York on Friday, 1 May.
