SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES EXCHANGE OF PRISONERS OF WAR BETWEEN IRAN AND IRAQ 19980417The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:The Secretary-General has learned with great satisfaction that the Islamic Republic of Iran and Iraq have exchanged a large number of prisoners of war. He hopes that this will contribute to a further easing of tension in the region and that the situation of any remaining prisoners of war will very soon be resolved. The Secretary-General takes this opportunity to commend the humanitarian role of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in facilitating this important matter. * *** *
