NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Masao Nakayama, the new Permanent Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Nakayama served as Resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federated States of Micronesia to Japan from 1989 to 1997. During that time, he was also accredited as non-Resident Ambassador to China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Republic of South Korea and Singapore.

From 1980 to 1989, Mr. Nakayama was the Chief of International Affairs in his Government's Foreign Affairs Department. He served as the Assistant Chief of Training and then Chief of Training in the Department of Personnel of the Office of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from 1974 to 1979.

In 1969, Mr. Nakayama was elected Member of the Congress of Micronesia (now known as the Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia), and in 1968 member of the Truk District Legislature (now Chuuk State). He was Assistant Legislative Clerk in the Truk District Legislature in 1965.

Prior to entering government service, Mr. Nakayama taught in the Truk District High School in 1966 and the Truk District Intermediate School in 1961. He attended the University of the Philippines from 1963 to 1965, and the College of Guam from 1961 to 1963. He was also schooled at the Pacific Islands Central School from 1958 to 1961.

Born in 1941 in Chuuk State, Mr. Nakayama is married with seven children.
