SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS WITH LEADER OF SUDAN'S NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE

19960904The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for the Secretary-General:

The Secretary-General met yesterday at 5:30 p.m. with Mohamed Osman Al- Mirghany, Leader of the National Democratic Alliance of the Sudan.

Mr. Al-Mirghany was accompanied by Mansour Khalid, the Secretary-General of the Alliance's External Relations Committee, as well as other members of the Alliance.

Mr. Al-Mirghany stated that he requested the meeting to apprise the Secretary-General of the deteriorating situation in the Sudan which he described as an uprising of the Sudanese people. Mr. Al-Mirghany emphasized that the ongoing situation constituted a serious violation of the basic human rights of the Sudanese people and that the international community should lend its attention to the suffering people of the Sudan.

The Secretary-General referred to the report he submitted to the Security Council pursuant to resolution 1054 (1996) as well as the replies received from Member States on their compliance with that resolution. The Secretary-General reviewed with Mr. Al-Mirghany the various peace initiatives, including those undertaken by the Inter-Governmental Authority for Drought and Development (IGADD), to reach a peaceful solution to the civil war in the Sudan. He reaffirmed the crucial role the United Nations continues to play in alleviating the humanitarian situation in the country through Operation Lifeline Sudan (OLS).
