SECRETARY-GENERAL CONDEMNS ISRAELI SHELLING OF UNIFIL POSITION 19960418The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:The Secretary-General has learned with shock and horror of the shelling of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) position near the village of Qaana in southern Lebanon. According to initial reports, 560 people from the area were sheltering in the headquarters of the Fijian battalion when the shells exploded. The Israeli shelling killed at least 45 people and wounded 100 others, including three Fijian peace-keepers. The Secretary-General deplores and condemns this shelling in the strongest possible terms. The Secretary-General is dispatching a senior military officer to conduct an immediate investigation into the shelling. * *** *
