HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE CONTINUES CONSIDERATION OF WORKING METHODS

19960402The Human Rights Committee this afternoon continued its consideration of recommendations submitted by its working group on working methods, focusing in particular on how to deal with the problem of overdue reports.

Among other matters, it approved a paragraph by which the group suggests that, in very exceptional circumstances, when a State was late in submitting its report owing to bona fide material difficulties, the State might be asked to send its delegation for the purpose of discussing with the Committee how to overcome those difficulties.

The Committee also approved a paragraph by which the working group proposes that, at each press conference convened at the end of the Committee's session, it may publicize the list of reports which were long overdue. In considering the date to be established for new reports, the Committee would take into account the relevant circumstances in each case.

The Human Rights Committee will meet again at 10 a.m. Thursday, 4 April, to conclude its consideration of the recommendations of its working group.
