SECRETARY-GENERAL TO DEPART FOR BRAZIL, MEXICO 19960223The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:Secretary-general Boutros Boutros-Ghali leaves Monday, 26 February, for an official visit to Brazil and Mexico, his eighth visit to Latin America. While in Brazil, the Secretary-General will hold meetings with President Fernando Henrique Cardoso and other senior officials in the Brazilian Government, as well as with local dignitaries in Sao Paulo and Brasilia. The Secretary-General will go to the Brazilian Congress to meet with the Presidents of the Senate and House of Representatives. He will also hold a meeting with the President of the Brazilian Supreme Court. The Secretary- General will deliver lectures at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Sao Paulo and the Rio Branco Institute in Brasilia. The Secretary-General will participate in two signing ceremonies of United Nations Development Programme sponsored programmes: one for education activities; the other for the protection of the rain forest. The Secretary-General will spend a private weekend in Mexico before the start of his official visit. In Mexico, the Secretary-General will meet President Ernesto Zedillo and other high-ranking administration officials. He will address members of the Foreign Affairs Commissions of both chambers of the Mexican Congress. Visiting Tlatelolco, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Secretary- General will deliver a Magisterial Lecture on "The Role of the United Nations in the Maintenance of International Peace and Security".
