GUATEMALA PEACE NEGOTIATIONS TO RESUME 22-23 FEBRUARY IN MEXICO CITY 19960214The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:After consultations with the Government of Guatemala and the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG) and following the appointment of the Government's negotiating commission earlier this week, the United Nations has invited the parties to resume their negotiations on 22 and 23 February. The first meeting will continue consideration of the agenda item entitled "Social and economic aspects and the agrarian situation". At the kind invitation of the Government of Mexico, the meeting will take place in Mexico City. On the eve of the resumption of the Guatemala peace negotiations, the Secretary-General urges the parties to show flexibility and to respond to hopes in Guatemala and the international community at large that rapid progress will be made at the negotiating table. The Secretary-General reiterates his willingness to do his utmost to help the parties build on the agreements already concluded and promptly reach a comprehensive and lasting peace. * *** * United Nations
