19951027The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman For Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General met today with the Vice-President of Iraq, Taha M. Marouf. The meeting, which lasted 40 minutes, was almost totally devoted to a discussion of the current situation in Iraq and Security Council resolution 986 (1995). The Secretary-General, as he had in the past meetings with Iraqi officials, urged the Government to accept resolution 986 and begin negotiations on its implementation. The Vice-President reviewed for the Secretary-General the problems his Government had with the resolution. He did, however, state that he would relay the Secretary-General's message to his leadership.

The Vice-President also congratulated the Secretary-General on the great success of the fiftieth anniversary commemorative session.
