Press Backgrounder on G8 Summit

WHEN: Thursday, May 29, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

WHAT: Development issues permeate the 2003 G8 Summit, from the reconstruction of Iraq to President Bush's calls to end hunger in Africa and fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The Center for Global Development is pleased to offer a press backgrounder on the development issues on the Summit agenda, and the likely dynamics between G-8 members on those issues.

The June 29 event will cover:

-- A run-down of the development topics on the Summit agenda. -- The impact of Iraq reconstruction on implementing G8 commitments to Africa. -- Unbundling President Bush's pre-Summit announcements: -- $5 billion per year foreign aid initiative (Millennium Challenge Account) -- $15 billion Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief -- Initiative to End Hunger in Africa -- Elimination of export subsidies -- Commitment to $1 billion clean water initiative -- Europe's, Japan's and Canada's likely response to U.S. initiatives.
