State of Mind: America 2002, Nationwide Public Radio Town Hall Meeting To Be Taped Feb. 7

NEW YORK, Jan. 23 -- State of Mind: America 2002, a landmark two-hour nationwide public radio town hall meeting, will be taped on Feb. 7 simultaneously before live audiences at The Museum of Television & Radio in New York City and The National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The program will explore the mental health and emotional well-being of the nation.

This special edition of the national, weekly public radio show The Infinite Mind will feature invited guests Tipper Gore, Honorary Chair of the National Mental Health Awareness Campaign; Rosalynn Carter; author and psychiatrist Peter Kramer; Marian Wright Edelman of the Children's Defense Fund; and noted clergyman the Rev. William Sloane Coffin. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher will discuss the state of mind of America in a pre-recorded sit-down interview with noted TV and radio journalist Robert Krulwich. Special musical performances will include an appearance by folksinger/songwriter Judy Collins.

The event will be hosted jointly by John Hockenberry in New York and by The Infinite Mind's host, Dr. Fred Goodwin, in Washington. Dr. Goodwin is a former director of the National Institute of Mental Health and a noted clinician and research scientist.

The two-hour broadcast will examine a wide range of issues affecting the mental health and emotional well-being of Americans as the nation heads out of the turmoil of 2001 into a challenging 2002, including the chronic mental health "ripple effect" and prolonged trauma from the terrorist attacks, access to mental health care for children, mental health insurance parity, stigma, resilience, and the "new normal."

This special broadcast is co-sponsored by public radio stations WNYC/New York and WAMU 88.5FM/Washington, D.C. The broadcast will air on public radio stations across the U.S. and Canada beginning Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002 (check local listings for date and time in your area). The program can also be heard on The Infinite Mind's Web site (http://www.theinfinitemind.com) starting Feb. 13.

An extended educational outreach campaign will accompany the broadcast, produced in conjunction with the National Mental Health Association, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, the National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association and the National Mental Health Awareness Campaign.
