Surgeon General to Discuss AIDS on the 15th Annual World AIDS Day, December 1

Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona will promote AIDS awareness, research, prevention, and treatment in two events on Monday, December 1, in Washington, D.C. Dr. Carmona will visit the Family Medical Counseling Services, a clinic that provides HIV/AIDS prevention services and care in Washington, D.C., and later be the keynote speaker at HHS' department-wide observance of World AIDS Day.

During his remarks Dr. Carmona will discuss his first encounter with HIV/AIDS as a medical intern at San Francisco Mission General Hospital in the early 1980s and what the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is doing to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and care for people who are currently infected.

On the evening of Dec. 1, Dr. Carmona will depart for Uruguay, where he will participate in site visits and workshops as part of the 8th World STI/AIDS Congress. Dr. Carmona will open the Congress on Dec. 2.
