WHAT: Press Conference - On the eve of Mother's Day weekend, Rep. Louise Slaughter, a champion for children's health, will announce the introduction of the Hormone Disruption Research Act of 2002. Hormone disruption is a phenomenon in which synthetic chemicals interfere with naturally produced hormones to cause developmental and reproductive abnormalities. These chemicals can accumulate in the bodies of people and wildlife and are unintentionally passed on from mother to child in the womb. This new legislation would authorize up to $500 million for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to conduct and coordinate a five-year research program on hormone disruption. Rep. Slaughter will be joined by Dr. Theo Colborn, co-author of Our Stolen Future, the book that brought world-wide attention to the devastating effects of hormone disruptors on human and animal reproduction.
