Women's Group Criticizes Decision To Conceal Abortion-Breast Cancer Research From South Dakota Women 1/7/2004
From: Karen Malec of Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer, 877-803-0102 or response@abortionbreastcancer.com PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill., Jan. 7 -- The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer deplores the decision by South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds and Health Secretary Doneen Hollingsworth to conceal the abortion-breast cancer (ABC) research from South Dakota residents. Six medical groups recognize the overwhelming evidence supporting abortion as a risk factor for breast cancer. (1) Five say abortion leaves a woman with more cancer-vulnerable cells than what she had before her pregnancy began. Additionally, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons has called for "full disclosure" of a "highly plausible" relationship. The Catholic Medical Association has called on states to pass informed consent legislation. "What's the governor's problem with telling women that much?" asked Karen Malec, president of the coalition. "This spineless decision is unjustifiable. It demonstrates that Planned Parenthood, Governor Rounds and Secretary Hollingsworth -- like Big Tobacco and tobacco state politicians -- are willing to deny people the right to make an informed choice about a preventable risk for cancer. Withholding that information damages the credibility of the state's Health Department. "Planned Parenthood knows that the ABC link is bad for business," commented Mrs. Malec. "Hollingsworth is in a position to know that the National Cancer Institute's politically-inspired decision to dismiss the ABC link contradicted a half-century of biological and epidemiological research. Either she's not at the top of her game as the head of a health agency or else she's an abortion industry supporter who has little concern for women's lives and can be easily influenced by Big Business. Neither possibility reflects well on her." No experts deny that abortion causes breast cancer in another way by robbing women of the single most effective means of reducing risk for the disease - having an early first full term pregnancy and increased childbearing (an effect even recognized by the anti-information, pro-industry cancer groups). Texas requires doctors to inform patients about this. Minnesota requires them to inform patients about the existence of research independently linking abortion with the disease. The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer is an international women's organization founded to protect the health and save the lives of women by educating and providing information on abortion as a risk factor for breast cancer.
