Dr. John W. Mayo Elected to National Safety Council Board of Directors

ITASCA, Ill., Oct. 14 -- The National Safety Council (NSC) announced today that John W. Mayo, Dean of the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the National Safety Council. His term started October 7 with the opening of the NSC's 90th Annual Congress & Expo in San Diego.

Mayo was recently appointed as the Dean of the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. He is a professor of economics, business and public policy and Executive Director of the Center for Business and Public Policy at Georgetown. The Center focuses attention on workplace safety and the role of public policy. It also addresses ethical issues related to safety, and more generally, the relationship of ethics and industry. Mayo served as Senior Associate Dean of the business school from 1999 - 2001. He is also a Zaeslin Fellow of Law and Economics at the University of Basel in Switzerland. Mayo's research interests include the areas of industrial organization, regulation and deregulation in the telecommunications and electric utility industries. He has published more than 35 articles and is co-author of six books and monographs, including Government and Business: The Economics of Antitrust and Regulation.

"We are very pleased to have Dr. Mayo join the Board. His knowledge of business operations, finance, strategic planning and fundraising will be valuable additions to our board," said Alan C. McMillan, President and CEO of the NSC. "In addition to his position on our Board, Dr. Mayo will serve as Vice President of the Educational Resources Division. In this capacity, he will help to lead the activities of NSC members and volunteers involved in education." This group is comprised mainly of education and safety and health professionals at primary schools, secondary schools, vocational-technical schools, colleges and universities. This division conducts initiatives that address educational and societal needs related to safety and health.

Prior to his appointment at Georgetown University, Professor Mayo taught graduate and undergraduate economics classes at several universities including Washington University, where he received his Master's and Ph.D., the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech. He has also served as the Chief Economist, U.S. Senate Small Business Committee. Additionally, Professor Mayo has served as an advisor and consultant to both public and private agencies including the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, AT&T, MCI, Sprint, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Department of Energy, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In that capacity, Dr. Mayo has participated in a number of regulatory and antitrust proceedings and has testified before state and federal legislative and regulatory bodies on a number of matters, including monopolization, price fixing, mergers, and regulatory pricing policy.

The National Safety Council (NSC), America's safety and health leader for 90 years, is a not-for-profit, nongovernmental, international public service organizations dedicated to protecting life and promoting health. The Council's Board of Directors is its principal governing body, providing strategic and fiduciary oversight to the Council's staff and activities involving its 37,500-plus member businesses, labor organizations, schools, public agencies, private groups and individuals. Founded in 1913, and Chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1953, NSC's scope includes highway, community and recreational safety, as well as occupational and environmental health.
