
Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association Announces Student Design Competition Winners 5/3/2004

LAUREL, N.J., May 3 -- The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) is pleased to announce the winners of the 1st Annual JPMA Student Design Competition. Rebecca Finell, a junior at Arizona State University, is the grand prize winner of $2,500. Matt Wilcox, a senior at the University of Wisconsin Stout, and Beth Johnson, a senior at Savannah College of Art and Design, are the second prize winners of $1,500 each. Jose Ramon Rodriguez Bosch, a second-year graduate student at Savannah College of Art and Design, and Rochelle Jayne Letourneau, a junior at Arizona State University, are the third prize winners of $1,000 each. Finell, a native of Tempe, won for her design of a bath toy scoop, drain, and storage unit called "Frog Pod." Wilcox, from Jonesville, WI, designed a chair specifically for children with autism called "Shell Chair." Johnson, of Savannah, GA, developed "Urban Baby," a stroller that can be converted to a baby carrier. Bosch, also from Savannah, GA, created the "Baby Bidet" which is a changing table with a spray gun to wash the diaper area, that then transitions to a potty trainer. Letourneau, a resident of Scottsdale, AZ, crafted "Tiko," a child's dental center. Honorable mentions were also given to the following students from Columbus College of Art and Design: Cincinnati, OH resident Daniel DeBrunner for "Snuggle Warmer", Shaun Gormley from West Milford, NJ for "Every Thing's Daisy Baby Monitor," and Sugandh Goel of Pune, Maharashtra, India for "Panda Hug Carrier." Lindsey Helgeson from New London, WI, John Henry Northrup from Lakeville, MN and Jeff Schwartz from St. Paul, MN attend the University of Wisconsin Stout and also received honorable mentions for their designs, "Convertible Changing Pad" "Baby Shaker Music Learning Toy" and "KidSpace". As did Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design students Amy Workman and Benjamin Llyod, residents of Sterling, IL and Wauwatosa, WI, respectively. Workman developed the "Van-Go Travel Tray." Llyod created "Foodster." The competition was open to all industrial design students enrolled in a degree program at any of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) affiliated schools. The judges, comprised of IDSA member designers, critiqued each submission for design, design research and ergonomics. The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, Inc. is a national trade organization of more than 400 companies in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. These companies manufacture and/or import infant products such as cribs, car seats, strollers, bedding, and a wide range of accessories and decorative items.
