Local Plastic Surgeon Named President Of The Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation

SAN ANTONIO, Nov. 5 -- Stephen Mathes, MD, professor of surgery, division of plastic and reconstructive surgery, University of California, San Francisco, was today named president of the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (PSEF), the research and educational arm of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Dr. Mathes took office at the Society's 71st Annual Scientific Meeting in San Antonio, on Tuesday, November 5, and will serve for one year.

Dr. Mathes received his medical degree from Louisiana State University and completed his plastic surgery residency at Emory University in Atlanta in 1977. He began his residency in general surgery at the University of Virginia and completed it at Emory University in 1975. Dr. Mathes received his certification from The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) in 1979.

From 1970-1972, Dr. Mathes served in the U.S. Army as assistant chief of the department of surgery for the Fort Polk Army Hospital in Louisiana and finished his duty as a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

"As PSEF president I will work to ensure the Foundation continues to equip plastic surgeons with all the educational and research tools they need to remain successful," said Dr. Mathes. "PSEF will continue to establish new sources of funding for both directed and non-directed research for promising young surgeon scientists and clinicians who wish to contribute to new technologies and ideas in plastic surgery. Additionally, PSEF will place more emphasis on sharing knowledge of technological advances with plastic surgeons internationally so the specialty can deliver more effective treatments around the world."

In addition to his new position as PSEF president, Dr. Mathes is a member of the American College of Surgeons where he serves as chairman of the Advisory Council for Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, sits on the Health Policy Steering Committee, and is California governor-at-large. He is also active in several other professional organizations including the Association of Academic Chairmen in Plastic Surgery where he served as president, The American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Cleft Palate Association, and the American Surgical Association.
