From: Mark Hemingway of the Hudson Institute, 202-974-2420; E-mail: mark@hudsondc.org News Advisory: What: Hudson Institute Conference On Assessing The Value Of Medical Technology: Innovation In The Medical Device Industry When: Friday, June 14 Noon-2:30 p.m. Where: Mansfield Room, U.S. Capitol The pace of medical technology innovation, and the investment dollars that fuel it, are largely determined by how policymakers determine the "value" of medical technology advances. Budgetary considerations have led both public and private health care payers to become increasingly cost-conscious when making coverage decisions. Has the focus on short term cost-savings come at the price of lost innovation in individual treatment? Decisions by the federal agencies responsible for determining coverage of medical devices, most notably the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), affect the investment environment in medical technology. How do investors view today's regulatory environment? What changes might spur an increase in investment that could lead to improvements in patient care? Conference includes speeches by Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) and The Honorable Mark McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., of the Council of Economic Advisers, and commissioned papers by Professor Peter Neumann of the Harvard University School of Public Health, and David Skanderson, Ph.D. of KPMG, LLP. Commentators include Kris Jenner, M.D., Ph.D., Vice President, T. Rowe Price; Robert Berenson, M.D., F.A.C.P., former director, Center for Health Plans and Providers, HCFA; Kenneth Kent, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Georgetown University; Jeff Lemieux of the Progressive Policy Institute and Irwin Stelzer of Hudson Institute.
