THE NEW CENSUS DATA ON POVERTY AND INCOME: What Do They Tell Us?

With Center staff:

-- Robert Greenstein, executive director

-- Isaac Shapiro, senior fellow

-- Kathy Porter, senior research analyst

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities will hold a conference call briefing Friday, Sept. 26 at 12:45 p.m. (EDT) to provide analysis of the new Census Bureau figures for 2002 on poverty and income, which will be released that morning. Among the topics that the briefing will cover are:

-- What do the data say about poverty and poverty trends among specific demographic groups, including women and racial minorities?

-- What do the data show about the depth of poverty as well as the extent of poverty C i.e., did those who are poor grow poorer, on average, in 2002?

-- Given the deterioration of the economy since 2001 and the rise of long-term unemployment in 2002, what prospects do the data for 2002 hold out for poverty trends taking shape in 2003?

-- Policy implications of these data.

After brief presentations, the panelists will take questions.
