American Life League to 58 U.S. Senators: Embryonic Stem Cell Harvesting is Wrong -- Dead Wrong 6/14/2004
From: Joe Giganti of American Life League, 703-928-9695 or jgiganti@all.org WASHINGTON, June 14 -- "Sen. Orrin Hatch's position on human embryonic stem cell research is simply inane," said American Life League president Judie Brown. Hatch and 57 other senators are demanding that President Bush approve of and provide federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. In a recent interview on the matter, Hatch defended the senators' ghoulish demands by callously claiming that embryonic stage human beings are really only "fertilized eggs that are going to be discarded anyway." "The scientific fact is that a human being begins at fertilization," said Brown. "What Sen. Hatch is spouting is science fiction. When the sperm joins the egg, a separate, individual human being is created -- that's biology 101 and these senators should know that. Sen. Hatch has fallen into the rhetorical pit of those who wish to persuade the public that human beings -- prior to implantation in their mothers' womb -- are really nothing more than matter. That is a false, deceptive and evil description based on man's selfish desires. Hatch's interpretation is wrong and we call on him to correct his errors." "Human embryonic stem cell research is unethical. One can never do evil, even if good might come from it," said Brown, "and there is no shred of evidence that human embryonic stem cell research will cure or treat dreadful diseases such as Alzheimer's or multiple sclerosis." Hatch is leading a misguided effort to convince Americans that it is consistent to claim to be pro-life while supporting the wholesale killing of the youngest members of the human family. "Regardless of how many Nobel laureates and Hollywood stars join Hatch and other senators in this position, research that kills living human embryos can never be justified," said Brown.
