As tax filing season gets underway, the government's leading tax policy experts will gather in San Antonio next week for the American Bar Association Section of Taxation's Midyear Meeting. More than a thousand tax lawyers and professionals are expected to attend the three days of meetings and programs at the Marriott Rivercenter, where they will hear the latest on topics ranging from international and corporate tax reform, to lawyer ethics, to tax shelters, to low-income taxpayer assistance.

Friday meeting highlights include:

-- 2:30 - 4 p.m. "2002 Tax Law Challenge" Four Teams have advanced to the semi-final round of the Tax Law Challenge. These teams will present their case before a panel of distinguished tax lawyers and judges, including Pamela F. Olson, assistant secretary of the treasury for tax policy, and B. John Williams, chief counsel, Internal Revenue Service. More 50 students entered this year's contest, designed to give law students the opportunity to research, write about and present their analyses of a "real life" tax planning issue.

Saturday Meeting Highlights Include:

-- 9:30 a.m. "Sarbanes-Oxley for the Tax Practitioner" - Part I of a two-hour panel discussion of how the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 impacts tax practice and tax controversy work, especially as it relates to new regulations governing attorney conduct and auditor independence.

-- 10:30 a.m. "Document Retention and Destruction - the Lessons of Arthur Andersen" - Overview of federal and state record retention requirements concluding with an analysis of the lessons learned from Arthur Andersen.

-- 12 p.m. "Current and Upcoming Projects from the Office of Tax Policy." -- Pamela F. Olson, assistant secretary of the treasury for tax policy, delivers the Section luncheon address.

-- 12:40 p.m. "International Tax Reform - Where Do We Go From Here?" -- a panel of nationally-recognized economists, tax lawyers and Capitol Hill staffers will debate possible reform of the international provisions of the Tax Code.

Also on Saturday, the section will be offering morning and afternoon training to its members interested in participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides free tax return preparation services for low-income individuals at sites throughout the country. Both sessions will be held in Conference Rooms, Level 3, Rivercenter.
