
'Tobacco Control is in Our Hands' First National Hispanic/Latino Conference on Tobacco Prevention and Control 2/8/2002
From: Juan Carlos Vega of the National Latino Council on Alcohol And Tobacco Prevention, 301-237-9472 News Advisory: For the first time, nationwide Hispanic/Latino leaders and healthcare professionals will convene on Feb. 14-15, in Washington, D.C., to attend the 1st National Hispanic/Latino Conference on Tobacco Prevention and Control, title Tobacco Control is in Our Hands ("El Control del Tabaco esta en Nuestras Manos"). The focus will be on the negative health, social, and economic impact the tobacco industry's targeted marketing has on Hispanics/Latinos nationwide and worldwide. The conference will feature up to date information, resources, and skills building workshops to educate and empower the Hispanic/Latino community and those who serve them. The workshops will touch on topics such as advocacy, prevention, cessation, environmental tobacco smoke, elimination of health disparities, and grant writing. The speakers represent various culturally relevant successful tobacco control programs from around the country, including the CDC, Smokeless States, American Legacy Foundation, and states such as California, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and Florida. The conference, organized by the National Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention (LCAT), is being co-sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Office of Smoking and Health, American Legacy Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Tobacco Training and Technical Assistance Consortium, Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Office of Minority Health, the National Cancer Institute, as well as various state and local sponsors.
