EVENT: A new research report profiling online political activists will be released at a press conference hosted by The George Washington University's Institute for Politics Democracy & the Internet (IPDI). The report, "Political Influentials Online," answers these questions:

-- Are online political activists the cyber-geeks portrayed by the press or are they "influential Americans" as defined in the book "The Influentials"?

-- Are these online activists new to the political arena or are they the same old political operatives using a different medium?

-- What is their demographic profile?

-- How big is this cohort of online political activists?

-- Carol Darr, director of IPDI and associate research professor at GW's Graduate School of Political Management, co- author of "Political Influentials Online"

-- Joseph Graf, project director at IPDI and adjunct professor at GW's School of Media and Public Affairs, co-author of "Political Influentials Online"

-- Jon Berry, VP of RoperASW and senior research director of Roper Reports, co-author of "The Influentials"

-- Tom Acquaviva, director of Nielsen//NetRatings PoliticalView

BACKGROUND:

Nielsen//NetRatings and RoperASW conducted online and telephone surveys, respectively, of more than 2,400 Americans for "Political Influentials Online." MSNBC.com and Slate.com provided funding for the report.

IPDI is part of GW's Graduate School of Political Management. Funded by a grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts, IPDI is the premier center for research and advocacy on online politics to increase citizen participation and uphold democratic values.
