GREENBELT, Md., Nov. 21 -- On October 30, 2003, the NASA Goddard Environmental Services contract was awarded to a small team of companies, including Global Science & Technology, Inc., led by Proxtronics Incorporated, a minority-owned 8(a) radiation and environmental services firm located in Springfield, Va.

The Environmental Services Contract provides support to the Goddard Environmental Team (GET) in the environmental stewardship of Goddard Space Flight Center, in Greenbelt, Md., and in assuring compliance with environmental regulatory requirements. Proxtronics recognized the advantages of applying new geographic information systems (GIS) technologies to the tasks of environmental oversight and control, and chose Global Science & Technology (GST) as the GIS service provider for this portion of the contract, as well as other IT services, including database management and outreach.

GST is a recognized leader in the GIS field and in the development of geospatial standards. GST has applied GIS technologies in support of several Government agencies in the areas of data management, clearinghouse support, standards development and implementation, disaster relief, fire control, and immediately following the 9-11 attacks. GST is also a member of the Open GIS Consortium and participates in the Federal Geographic Data Committee and ISO technical committee for geographic information. Environmental Service is a new area of application for GIS, and GST is pursuing opportunities in this field.
