News Advisory:

The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) has announced the presentation of the 2002 Congressional Advocate of the Year Award to Sen. Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine). Each year, CWLA honors a member of the U.S. Congress who has demonstrated outstanding leadership ability and commitment to improving the lives of children, youth, and families.

Snowe will be honored for leading the fight to make the child tax credit refundable. This child tax credit will help nearly 17 million more children of low-income working poor families in this country.

Snowe will be presented the award on Thursday evening, March 7 at 7 p.m. during CWLA's Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony. The dinner will be held at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Established in 1920, CWLA has nearly 1,200 public and voluntary member agencies that provide direct services to abused, neglected, abandoned, and otherwise vulnerable children and their families. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the organization is a leading advocate for quality child welfare services and federal legislation to benefit children and families, trains thousands of social workers and conducts numerous conferences and meetings each year, develops child abuse treatment and prevention strategies, conducts original research, and is the oldest and largest publisher of child welfare materials in North America.

For additional information on the conference, press passes, or specific locations and times for events, contact the CWLA press office at 202-745-2128 or E-mail press@cwla.org
