The head of OSHA and the Dean of Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business will form an alliance for workplace safety to open the annual 2-day Workplace Safety Summit at the School's Center for Business and Public Policy on Thursday, April 10, at 1 p.m. National Safety Council President and CEO Alan McMillan will deliver the keynote address about workplace safety problems to highlight the 2nd day of the summit on Friday, April 11, at 1:15 p.m. The Summit is the only event of its kind that brings together high-level academics, business executives, government leaders, labor union activists, nonprofit representatives, and opinion leaders to work on the nation's workplace safety problems, its causes, and possible solutions. Workplace safety incidents in the U.S. cause nearly 6,000 deaths, 6 million injuries and illnesses, and cost U.S. businesses and taxpayers over $170 billion annually in lost productivity and higher worker compensation, health care and insurance costs. The goals of this year's Summit are to elevate safety as a priority of business, and to advance the understanding that safety results from programmatic attention ("safety is not an accident").

Background: The establishment of Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business Ctr. for Business and Public Policy is a direct outcome of the School's 1st workplace safety summit in 2001, when over 100 stakeholders gathered to discuss workplace safety issues and ways to make worker safety a national priority. The aim of this year's summit is for stakeholders to identify specific goals for developing and advancing a national workplace safety agenda.
