WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 -- The following Census Bureau Tip Sheet is a product of the U.S. Census Bureau's Public Information Office:

Upcoming Demographic Census 2000

Summary File 3 -- Detailed sample data compiled from responses to census long-form questionnaires and summarized for geographic areas down to block group or census tract levels. Files will be released for 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, on a flow basis, through this month. The following states or state equivalents are scheduled for release:

Sept. 10: Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Sept. 17: Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Texas and Washington.

Non-Census

Census Bureau and University of Michigan Open Research Lab -- The Census Bureau and the University of Michigan open research data center that allows qualified researchers restricted access to Census Bureau economic and demographic data. (Tentatively scheduled for release in one week.)

Monthly Population Estimates: 1990 to 2000 -- Monthly population estimates of the United States by age and sex, from April 1990 to April 2000. (Tentatively scheduled for release in one week.)

Older Foreign-Born Population in the United States: 2000 -- Data from the March 2000 Current Population Survey on the socioeconomic characteristics of people age 65 and over who were not U.S. citizens at birth and how they compare with older people native to this country. (Tentatively scheduled for release in one week.)

Media Advisory on Income and Poverty News Conference -- The who, when and where of the news conference on the annual income and poverty reports. (Tentatively scheduled for release in two weeks.)

Financing the Future: Postsecondary Students, Costs and Financial Aid: 1996-97 -- Economic and demographic characteristics of college students and the costs and financial aid associated with their schooling. (Tentatively scheduled for release in three weeks.)

Income and Poverty in the United States: 2001 -- Two separate reports providing the latest national and state findings on income and poverty levels. (Tentatively scheduled for release in three weeks.)

Census Brief: The Older Foreign-Born Population in the United States: 2000 -- A two-page synopsis of the upcoming report, The Older Foreign-Born Population in the United States: 2000. Examines the socioeconomic characteristics of people age 65 and over who were not U.S. citizens at birth and how they compare to older people native to this country. (Tentatively scheduled for release in four weeks.)

Health Insurance Coverage: 2001 -- Annual report on characteristics of those who have health insurance and those who do not. National and state data. (Tentatively scheduled for release in four weeks.)

2000 Nonemployer Statistics -- Data on businesses without paid employees, including number of establishments and receipts for 298 industries; organized by nation, states, counties and metropolitan areas. (Tentatively scheduled for release in two weeks.)

Recently Released Demographic Census 2000

Summary File 3 -- Detailed sample data compiled from responses to census long-form questionnaires and summarized for geographic areas down to block group or census tract levels. The following states were released on Aug. 27: California, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana and New Mexico; and on Sept. 4: Arizona, Idaho, Maine, New Hampshire, Ohio, Puerto Rico and Wyoming. Summary Population and Housing Characteristics (PHC-1) -- Data based on responses to census short-form questions. Subjects: age, sex, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, household type and size, tenure (owner or renter-occupied) and whether occupied or vacant. Also, land area measurements and population density. This series is similar to 1990 census CPH-1 printed report series. States for which PHC-1 reports have been released are: Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, New York, Ohio and Oregon. Survey of Income and Program Participation, 8/26/02 -- Announcement of survey to collect data on household wealth, health insurance coverage, employment, income and other topics.

Consumer Expenditure Survey, 8/26/02 -- Announcement of October survey that collects data about how much Americans spend on groceries, clothing, health care and housing.

1992-2000 Survey of Program Dynamics, Second Longitudinal File -- Released through the Federal Electronic Research and Review Extraction Tool (FERRET), this file enables researchers to track individuals over time and study the effects of welfare reform. Census Bureau Facts for Features: Grandparents Day, 8/26/02 -- Statistics from the Census Bureau's demographic subject areas pertaining to grandparents. Internet address: http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2002/cb02ff14.html.

American Housing Survey for the United States: 2001 -- National and regional microdata, without names or addresses, on topics such as how people rate their neighborhood, monthly housing costs and reasons for moving. Available through Federal Electronic Research and Review Extraction Tool (FERRET). Radio

The "Profile America" CD for September is in distribution. This series of 60-second features, one for each day of the month, is heard on more than 500 stations across the country. Each feature is keyed to an event whose anniversary or observance is celebrated on the air date. September's edition features Hispanic Heritage Month, National Singles Week and the anniversary of the Billie Jean King versus Bobby Riggs "Battle of the Sexes" in tennis.

A companion program "Al-Dia" is produced for Spanish language stations. Copies of both programs are available by calling 301-763-2806 or e-mailing your request to rread@census.gov.

Television

Director's Denver Highlights Census Bureau Director C. Louis Kincannon visited Denver, Colo., in July. While there, Kincannon spoke to the National Conference of State Legislatures and toured the Stapleton Redevelopment Project, which uses Census Bureau data. He also met with local government and Hispanic leaders and was interviewed on several local television news shows. This video covers the highlights of that trip. TRT 2:08, Project no. V02-341.
